Management of Personal Conflicts of Interest for the University of Arizona
Institutions tend to either ban student-faculty dating altogether or where a supervisory relationship exists. The ages of the couple — her, 25; him, 71 — are unusually far apart. Princeton, like a growing number of institutions, has banned all student-faculty relationships, including for graduate students. Platt has said that she waited until two years after her graduation to ask Mitchell out. Mitchell, who is currently on preplanned leave, is just one of a number of professors to engage in or attempt to initiate a relationship with a former student or students. Still, experts with different positions on student-faculty dating advise against adopting any kind of timeline for dating former students. Andrew T. There are a lot of questions that will arise, with too many anomalies as far as circumstances. Just not now.
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ACADEMIC SUPERVISORS AND THEIR STUDENTS ARE NEVER OKAY
Relationships and dating are incompatible with PhDs, seems to be the conclusion. A recent BuzzFeed article really hit home with lots of my PhD friends. before the date starts. 2) Coffee 3) Coffee 4) My supervisor’s approval.
By Sharon Wu. Coupled with our developing passions for what we study, an encounter with someone with a depth of knowledge in our field can be incredibly alluring. But what about TAs? They walk the fine line between equal and superior. And they too are usually intelligent, accomplished, published, and passionate. We experience our TAs in a much more relaxed, casual setting.
How to break up with your PhD advisor
In this post I will try to explain why your advisor might be ignoring you and possible actions that you can take. Why do advisors ignore their students? Others may be underpaid and overloaded with work. In rare cases some may actually be negligent. Is your PhD advisor actually ignoring you?
Even if you can grade your SO’s work objectively, there might be a perception of unfairness among other students. Likewise, if any other situation should arise.
In some ways, sex between students and their professors is part of the mythology of academia. It turns up regularly in film and literature. The scenario typically involves a young female student seduced by her older and more knowledgeable teacher. Historically, male professors have considered a campus full of available young women a perk of academia. Attitudes began to change in the s and s, with the rise of feminism and an increasing number of female scholars in academia.
Real policy changes did not occur until the late s and s, when courts said schools could be held liable in sexual harassment cases. Since then, many universities have begun to address student-professor dating.

The University has an interest in ensuring that academic, employment, and business matters are decided on objective bases. At an institution such as the University of Arizona, a variety of personal and romantic relationships may exist among employees, University agents, students, and third parties. The University establishes this personnel policy to address conflicts of interest arising from interpersonal relationships not otherwise covered by existing policies or law.
The intent of this policy is to direct employees to disclose relationships that have created or may create conflicts of interest and to give the University an opportunity to manage and reconcile any such conflicts, if possible.

Well, I have started working on my thesis recently under the supervision of my advisor who is very attractive and well known in the community. We are not far apart in age and have a lot in common. He recently asked me out and though I said yes, I am now wondering if that was the right choice. I am worried that if others find out we will both be reprimanded.
I am also concerned that if the relationship doesn’t work it will make our professional relationship very akward. I don’t know if anyone else has found themselves in my position though I assume some have but I would appreciate some input on this predicament. Thank you. There are reprecussions to consider in case you get caught. He would be reprimanded and some action could be taken against him.

Finding a Supervisor
Sexual or romantic relationships may raise concerns of conflict of interest, abuse of authority, favoritism, and unfair treatment when both people are in the MIT work or academic environment, and one person holds a position of power or authority over the other. These relationships may also affect others in the work or academic environment, undermining the integrity of their supervision and evaluation as well. These concerns exist even when the relationship is considered consensual by both individuals.
In some instances, consent may not be as freely given as the more senior person in the relationship believes. Because of the possible adverse effects on the other party and on their fellow students, co-workers, colleagues, and others, the Institute prohibits all faculty, other academic instructional staff, other employees, and other non-student members of the MIT community paid or unpaid from having sexual or romantic relationships with certain MIT students and employees, whether or not the relationship is consensual.
